Text Features and Graphic Sources with Informational Reading
In this unit, students will identify and use text features to better understand nonfiction text.

Students will identify and use text and graphic features in informational text to help them understand and answer questions about the text.  Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of the bold print.  Students will be able to explain the importance of text and graphic features and how they are going to use them to help them as a reader.

RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

RI.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.

RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

RI.2.7 Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Today I will use text features, so that I can locate information in a nonfiction text.  I'll know I have it when I can identify the text feature and explain how it helped me better understand the text.

-I can explain how graphic sources help me understand an informational text.

 

Today I will use graphic sources, so that I can better understand an informational text.  I'll know I have it when I can explain how the graphic source helped me understand the passage.
